BRITISH STYLE OVERDRIVE

(ZVex Box Of Rock + mod.)

Come ho spiegato in questo precedente articolo, ho totalmente rivoluzionato la filosofia costruttiva dei miei pedali: per circuiti di tipo Fuzz, Boost, Overdrive e Distorsione, ho abbandonato le schede di circuito (PCB) per utilizzare il metodo Tag Board, influenzato dai circuiti di Hello Sailor Effects, dalle grafiche di Reeves Electro e dai componenti vintage del mio amico Tim Electro

Il primo pedale figlio di questa nuova avventura è il Classic Rock, un overdrive ispirato alle sonorità dei vecchi amplificatori Marshall.

Il circuito è lo ZVex Box of Rock modificato, con la sezione Boost sostituito dal “Crackle Not Okay”, ma andiamo con ordine.

ZVex è diventata famosa grazie ad un boost il Super Hard On, molto apprezzato per la sua trasparenza, la sua dinamica e per la convincente saturazione che riusciva ad offrire a settaggi estremi.
Il pedale è conosciuto anche come “Crackle Ok”, per una scritta presente su alcuni modelli, che intende spiegare all’utente che il fruscìo che si avverte nella regolazione del boost è normale, dovuto al biasing del transistor.

Il Box Of Rock mette in cascata tre Super Hard On a creare un overdrive molto organico e rispondente al tocco, aggiungendo la possibilità di dosare sia il volume che il livello di drive, oltre che bilanciare il tono.

A questo, aggiunge un separato Super Hard On come boost in cascata all’overdrive, per poter avere a disposizione un ulteriore sinta per i soli.

La mia modifica consiste nella variazione di valore di alcuni componenti, ma soprattutto nella sostituzione della sezione boost con un altro circuito, il “Crackle Not Okay” che, mantenendo il suono originario del Super Hard On, elimina il fastidioso fruscìo.

As I explained in a previous article, I have completely revolutionized the construction philosophy of my pedals: for Fuzz, Boost, Overdrive, and Distortion circuits, I’ve abandoned printed circuit boards (PCBs) in favor of the Tag Board method, influenced by the circuits of Hello Sailor Effects, the graphics of Reeves Electro, and the vintage components by my friend Tim Electro.

The first pedal born from this new adventure is the Classic Rock, an overdrive inspired by the tones of vintage Marshall amplifiers.

The circuit is a modified ZVex Box of Rock, with the Boost section replaced by the “Crackle Not Okay.” But let’s take it step by step.

ZVex became famous thanks to a boost pedal, the Super Hard On, highly regarded for its transparency, dynamics, and the convincing saturation it could deliver at extreme settings.
The pedal is also known as “Crackle OK,” due to a label found on some models, which explains to users that the crackling sound heard when adjusting the boost is normal and caused by the transistor biasing.

The Box of Rock cascades three Super Hard Ons to create a very organic, touch-sensitive overdrive, with controls for volume, drive level, and tone balance.

On top of that, it adds a separate Super Hard On as a cascaded boost after the overdrive, providing an additional gain stage for solos.

My modification consists of changing the value of some components, but most importantly, replacing the boost section with a different circuit — the “Crackle Not Okay” — which retains the original tone of the Super Hard On while eliminating the annoying crackle.
